Nine years on, US President Trump has paid another visit to China, making the “Beijing Moment” go viral worldwide. The visit was successful and historic, and its significance and outcomes deserve in-depth review.
I. A Stable and Forward-Moving China-US Relationship Is a Global Public Good
In today’s world, international rules and order are under strain, and global challenges keep emerging. Countries crave stability and positive energy. Given their economic size, political weight and global influence, China and the US form a key relationship shaping world peace, economic growth, supply chain stability and global governance.
The world expects China and the US to respect each other, seek common ground while reserving differences, coexist peacefully and pursue win-win cooperation. As Robert Kuhn of the Kuhn Foundation put it: in an uncertain world, a handshake between Chinese and US leaders is the “hard currency” the global market needs most.
Both nations are at critical stages of development. China has started its 15th Five-Year Plan, deepening reform, upgrading industries, fostering new productive forces and consolidating high-quality development. The US is approaching its 250th anniversary, with a heavy domestic agenda and many issues requiring China’s cooperation. By moving toward each other, China and the US have shown how to turn crisis into opportunity, boosting global confidence. With sound mutual understanding and correct positioning, the two countries can avoid the “Thucydides trap” and light the way for each other and the world.

II. A New Definition and Direction for China-US Relations
A key outcome of the visit was the leaders’ agreement to build a constructive, strategically stable relationship, setting a clear course for China-US ties over the next three years and beyond.
A “constructive, strategically stable relationship” means stability based on cooperation, healthy competition, manageable differences and lasting peace.
Economic and trade stability as the anchor: The two sides reached balanced, positive outcomes, agreeing to establish a Trade Council and an Investment Council, address agricultural market access concerns, and expand two-way trade under reciprocal tariff reduction frameworks. Seventeen CEOs of top US companies joined the visit, proving that China-US economic ties are inherently mutually beneficial. Apple CEO Tim Cook said: “One tree does not make a forest; together we can plant a forest.”
Expanding practical cooperation: In technology, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang’s last-minute flight on Air Force One showed that “decoupling and breaking chains” is not the way—open cooperation is. Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory, with 95% local supply, exemplifies mutual success. In people-to-people exchanges, the “5 Years, 50,000” initiative has made youth the backbone of friendship, injecting vitality into bilateral relations.
Addressing concerns properly: Respect for core interests is fundamental. The “Taiwan independence” issue must be removed as an obstacle. The US must see that “Taiwan independence” undermines cross-strait peace and regional stability, and recognize China’s inevitable reunification.
Coordinating on global and regional issues: As major powers, China and the US can lead on AI governance, regional hotspots and global challenges through APEC and G20, bridging the “AI divide” and delivering global public goods.

III. From Beijing Forward: Stay on the Right Path, Look to the Future
2026 will be a year of high-level China-US engagement, and the Beijing meeting got things off to a good start. China hopes 2026 will be a “historic, landmark year” for bilateral relations; the US aims to build “the best US-China relationship ever.” With a clear direction and steady steps, the future is promising.
Compared with nine years ago, China has eliminated absolute poverty, evolved from “world factory” to “world market” and “world platform,” and made breakthroughs in key technologies. Today’s China stands firm amid challenges.
Many foreign leaders have visited China this year, voting with their feet for confidence in China. Polls show growing recognition and goodwill toward China in the US and worldwide. Rooted in strength and composure, this trend is irreversible. China thinks in centuries, remaining steady through change.
The “Beijing Moment” in China-US relations has entered history. May both countries set off from Beijing, take steady steps for a long journey, build a new model for major-country relations, and create a better future for humanity.
